The monastery is between of, in past moments the
most fruitful gardens, vineyards and orchards and from the quiet and
pastoral side of that we can see Kınalıada.
We don’t know the
date of construction of monastery exactly. Monastery isn’t in any
trek of any traveler.
Firstly in 1728 Meletios when portrayed
the islands said that: “the four big islands which have
monasteries”. Afterwards Senior Momars for Burgazada said that: “an
island with a monastery” we understood that he meant Karipi because
he said: “higher of this there is a church with the name of Jesus.
Manuel Gideon found unexplained the mean of the name
“karipi”. Hasiotis, agreed with Scarlatti Vizandio who said that the
name “karipi” came from the Arabic word “garip” that means poor. But
also he added the hypothesis that the name “karipi” might came from
the name of the well which were in old vineyard.
After the World
War I in 1919-1920 the building of Karipi Monastery were given for
Whiterussians as asylum. Unfortunately, inadvertence all the east
pavilion of the cells had burned.
The fire was put off by the Americans who were
patrolled in Kınalıada by their fire boats. In the same time
habitants of Burgazada with the pump of Saint Jean saved the other
side of the cells.
There is a marble grave that we don’t know
whom is, in garden of the monastery opposite of the church.
Also there are three bells with different
sides in the right side of the church. In the bottom side of the
garden of church there is a chapel with the holy water of Saint
Nicholas who is a prophylactic of the sailors.
The church of
Saint George had destroyed by the earthquake of the 17-08-1999. In
2004 the church has restored.
